Fragen
PIN vergessen, was jetzt?
That request was not allowed.", "The service is unavailable right now. Please try again shortly.", "That didn't work. Please check and try again." und "Something went wrong on our side. Please try again."

Getting the alpha
Northmeadow is in alpha: an early version, free to test, that runs locally on your machine and is used in the browser. The test period ends on 31 January 2027. Alpha notices
The release is a source archive, signed and with checksums. The start guides are inside it: docs/alpha-start-wsl2.md for WSL2 on Windows, docs/alpha-start-linux.md and docs/alpha-start-macos.md. The release notes show how to check the checksums and the signature.

Getting the next version
When a newer alpha comes out, you install it the same way as this one, and it keeps what is already here: your notes, your mandates, your PINs and your printed recovery key keep working. If a future version ever cannot take over something from this one, its release notes will say so before you install it, and will tell you how to save a readable copy of your notes first (open the mandate and choose "Save a readable copy of everything"). Do not delete the folder .northmeadow-alpha in your home folder: that is where Northmeadow keeps your sealed notes and keys.
Questions
What if I forget my PIN?
It depends on how this mandate was set up. If you set it up without recovery, nobody holds a spare key for this mandate, not even Bavarian Studio. Write the PIN down and keep it somewhere safe. If you chose recovery through Bavarian Studio, Bavarian Studio can still open it for you. If a recovery key was set aside, an owner of this mandate can open it with that key.
What happens if I lose a device?
Remove it under Settings. A removed device will no longer open any mandate for you.
Who can read my notes?
Your notes are sealed. The service stores them and cannot read them, except for a mandate you set up with recovery through Bavarian Studio: Bavarian Studio can open that one for you. For every other mandate, the keys that open it stay with the people and agents entitled to it.
What can an agent do with my notes?
An agent works with a mandate only when a person has admitted it, and what it does is on the record. Full access belongs to a person and is never given to an agent.
Why did a mandate close by itself?
An open mandate seals itself when nothing has been typed, clicked, scrolled or touched for a set period. Opening it again needs your PIN. You can change the period under Settings, in Auto-seal.
How do I give a client the record of their mandate?
Open Activity, choose the mandate and export its record. The file lists the entries in order and comes with a file a separate tool can check. The file is not signed, so the check cannot show that nobody rewrote it.
It says I have reached the limit of mandates or agents.
Your workspace has a limit on mandates and agents. Settings shows it under This installation.
It asks me to sign in.
Please sign in to continue. Signing out signs you out of the app and, where it allows this, at your sign-in service. Your mandates still need this device and your PIN to open.
How does the record know a note was opened?
The device or agent that showed the note reports it, and the record keeps that report.
It says something went wrong or the service is unavailable.
The app shows one of 4 fixed sentences when a request fails: "That request was not allowed.", "The service is unavailable right now. Please try again shortly.", "That didn't work. Please check and try again." and "Something went wrong on our side. Please try again." Try again after a short while. If it keeps happening, report it from the Help screen.
